Country Dustie hits town

When Dustie M first came to the Brisbane, she reckons she was a country girl who didn't know the first thing about hairdressing. Well, she sure does now! Smart Start reports.

“All I knew,” says Dustie, “was that I wanted to be creative and spend time with different people.”

She signed up with an outfit called the Brisbane School of Hairdressing, and says that the vibrant, metropolitan learning really gave her a buzz.

“I will never forget the first time I visited the college – it was so full of life. People were laughing, smiling and learning. I thought to myself, ‘this is what I want to do; I want to be in this environment, learning and having fun at the same time’.”

She says that buzz continued.

“Once I started training, my eyes opened to the diverse cultures. There were students from every walk of life. I tried more international food than in my whole life before. It was just unbelievable.”

She loved it all: the learning, the students and the instructors, who had a range of industry experience including TV ads and movies.

“While I was attending the college my thoughts were, ‘If I take just one piece of knowledge from each instructor, I will be the best hairdresser that I could be’.”

One year after her graduation, she’s working as a hairdresser at Webster and Wood. She’s involved with hairdressing competitions to fine-tune her skills (check out her work on the models to the right), her career and to expand her career options!
